Media Dependence andRelational Maintenance in Interpersonal Relationships

Banfield, Sara and Chory, Rebecca M. “Media Dependence and Relational maintenance in Interpersonal
Relationships.” Communication Reports 22.1 (2009): 41-53. Scholar Search .Web. March 13, 2010.

Rebecca M. Chory, Associate Professor of Communication Studies at West Virginia University, and Sara Banfield, Instructor in the Communication and Languages Department at Raritan Valley Community College, predicted that those who are dependent on and addicted to media are not the best at interpersonal relationship maintenance. They found through study that those who were addicted to media, such as video games, would have a reduced amount of empathy and often wish to play games rather than spend time with significant others.
